Craig began studying and applying the elements of Six Sigma before they were formalized into today’s renowned breakthrough method. As an engineering graduate student at Brigham Young University in the early 1990s, he integrated these improvement techniques into his research and coaching of student product development teams. Upon beginning his career in 1994 at Motorola’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Lab in Florida, he was officially introduced to the just-formalized Six Sigma method. It resonated deeply with his previous findings. From that time, Craig has applied, taught, and led Six Sigma in all his endeavors, including management and technical capacities at Motorola, Iomega, General Atomics, and Fiji Water.

In 2002, Craig co-founded Savvi International, into which TolStack merged. Savvi provided solutions for business performance improvement using Six Sigma, Lean, and Business Process management techniques. Craig acted as the director of Savvi’s products, services, and tools. In 2006, Craig lived in the Fiji Islands and served as Director of Operational Excellence for Fiji Water. Today, Craig works with companies in the USA and internationally to integrate Six Sigma practices directly into their core operations.
A Master Black Belt, Craig has wielded Six Sigma techniques now for over 15 years, spanning projects from design to manufacturing to business process management, and at companies as varied as Abbott Labs, American Express, and the US Air Force. He is also an expert teacher, having instructed and mentored at all levels.

Assuming that I have an in-control, steady process and a reasonable measurement system, is Cpk the best way to measure process capability? Or are there other statistically valid ways to do this?

Hello, something that’s been bugging me lately – I hear the catchphrase “Lean removes waste, Six Sigma reduces variation” a lot lately. Usually it’s being used as an example of people who ‘just don’t get it’. Can you explain why that’s not a good summary of the two?

I realize it is after June 8, but I’m finally getting around to asking other questions. We have a test process that takes upwards of five days to run on a part. It is a wear test that just takes lots of cycles to complete. Performing a measurement systems analysis on that process seems highly impractical because of the time involved. Is there anything I can do to get a statistically valid feel for how capable my measurement system is without running many samples to failure?
We currently only have the ability to measure when the coating is worn through and we can detect the base metal. We cannot measure degrees of wear, say to know that we are half-way through the coating.
Can we, for example, replace the test media with something incredibly more aggressive to get to failure quicker and make some assumptions or comparisons with the actual process?

Many of our suppliers are from across the oceans, so they are a long and expensive plane ride away. Most have not had Six Sigma training. What would you recommend for options to help them get started with either an entire Six Sigma program or with key elements to help them better understand their manufacturing processes?
How can we help from so far away when we cannot send someone to each place for weeks to do the training?
What would you suggest, understanding that you don’t know our processes or issues, as the key tools for a supplier to start with?
Is there a resource that could work with them remotely to help? Does something like that have any shot at being useful?

Dear Mr. Gygi,
In considering defects per million opportunity (DPMO), it seems that the letters of the acronym do not describe the intended metric.
Does DPMO actually suggest DM/O or D/MO? It seems that “per” is in the wrong place.
I think DMPO (DM/O) more accurately describes the metric.
I know how to overlook the order of the letters and generate the intended metric, but just wondering about the origin of the acronym for the metric and your thoughts on my perspective. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
